(stolen shamlessly from a WoW subforum)

Let's start with what to do now:

1: level first aid and have spare wind wool cloth!

For the first time since TBC first aid will be a requirement for raiders not only do healing pots have a separate cool down from dps pots there are now a wide array of potions and tonics that clear debuffs. Now is the time to level it.

2. Fishing Gear

The more fishing skill you have the larger catches you get in WoD a capped fisher currently 950 will always catch enormous fish worth 5X the amount of a regular fish. Get out there and win some tournaments.

3. Fill a quest log to turn in the night of release

This is not as big of a thing as it was in past expacs since the story of the first soon seems to have you take a preset path... still xp is xp its worth grabbing

For Leveling

1.Outposts not all are created equal!

Spires of Arak
If your goal is raiding, power the smuggling run gives you much more long term power over the xp gain given by the brewery. Every ten minutes you can summon a merchant that commonly has garrison resources for sale. This is vital early on for establishing a power follower base to get you raid gear.

Gorgrond
The sparring arena wins out here although you do get less garrison resources then lumber mill the follower you gain far outweighs the sort term loss. It also allows much faster completion of the zone.

Talador
Pretty equal pick your favorite

Nagrand
Correl! Correl! i can not began to explain how amazing this building is... it lets you fight while mounted! GRAB IT

2.Next step your garrison

Most of your garrison has to built in a very specific way to maximize it. I will go over required building then optional.

What you need for sure:

  • Salvage
  • Inn
  • Armory
  • Barracks

Your second medium plot is a bit of a hard call. It is between the Barn and the lumbermill;
The lumber mill allows you to upgrade faster as with its bonus resources as well making your followers gear much faster when combined with the armory.
The barn lets you craft your own epics...
It is short term vs long term power gain though it should be noted if you have a excessive amount of gold you are able to simply buy the epics from other players though pre-raid release expect it to cost a fortune.

Out of all the buildings the inn and the salvage yard should be upgraded first with books you gain while leveling.

Profession building should really be matched to your own profession the bonus they give are more for profit then power.

3.Misc.

  • Be sure to kill the world bosses every week regardless of your level simply attacking them will give you a chance at loot.
  • Heroics now have that annoying as hell diablo loot system. The most important special states to look for are warforged and gems.
  • Challenge modes should be done daily once at cap for there epic.
  • Stop at your garrison repeatedly while leveling. I was able to get a mission that rewarded lfr quality gear 5 days into the expac.
  • Brawlers guild has a very good ring as well as a follower with the mentor trait that provides bonus exp to your other followers i would recommend completing as much of it as you are able asap.
  • The welfare Legendary quest starts at level 98 and is fairly simple to complete I would recommend doing it while leveling since you will be unlikely to want to do a normal at level 100.
  • It is far more effective to recruit level 100 follower then level new ones. Check though the achievements at where to grab each.
  • Apexis crystals are the new valor points grab the quests in the inn to receive some while leveling. your other major source will be from level 100 garrison quests.

Question:
i've been told salvage isn't all that great - and what kind of epics does the barn do? i was interested in my profession crafted ones, do i need the barn for those?

Answer:
Salvage yard isn't huge it is just the only small building with any value in regards to progression.
The barn is the sole way to produce savage blood that is needed by crafting profession to make a item to upgrade the ilvl of epic gear to raid quality.

To my knowledge no crafted epic needs savage blood but every item to upgrade them has it as a requirement.

I was with you until you started talking about the garrisons, then it got all confusing. Does anyone have a FULL in depth explanation and guide to garrisons they think is good? I know 0000.00 about them it seems.

Also the 3 battle standards you get (green. blue, purple) from the guild vendor gives you bonus xp and rep when dropped. If you are careful about where (an instance in a corner near where your moving on to) you drop them, you can get some more xp. Especially if you have friends trading off on dropping them too.

Yea but be careful with the battle standards cause they don't work on quest xp our stuff like that only on monster kills.

true but sometimes you can drop em in an instance or area your questing in and if you aren't going far from em, get a decent benefit. We got a lot of use in Jade temple from them as I recall due to its layout

A snippet...

3. Build Orders

Build Orders present a strategy how to construct the Garrison. Depending on the Garrison's level and it's intended purpose, there are specific buildings that have proven to be the best for specific types of players. There are so many buildings to choose from, and yet you may have but a few built.

3.1 Build Order for Leveling
This guide will suggest the best possible buildings for your Garrison during the Leveling phase.. It will include the first 2 levels of your Garrison. As you level up, some quest will award you with an item that can be exchanged for level 2 blueprints in Ashran, these items are Outpost Building Assembly Notes (small and medium buildings) and Comprehensive Outpost Construction Guide (large buildings). These are awarded at the end of one major quest line in each zone (excluding starting zones).

Garrison Level 1
Small: Build an Enchanter's Study. It will allow you to Disenchant all gear that you get from questing.
Large: Build the Barracks. It will enable additional missions for your followers, providing you with more gold /GR and them with additional exp so they can keep up with you. You will build this building via the fist quests you get when you make a garrison, and you won't really have anything else to choose from at this point.

Garrison Level 2
Small: Your 2nd small building should be the Salvage Yard, that can be acquired at level 96. It will allow you to collect Salvage from missions. Do not open these till you upgrade the Salvage Yard to level 2 (that is when they can drop useful loot)! If you are a slow leveler and getting to 96 would take you more then a day, build a profession building till then (make sure to have the said profession).
Medium: Make a Lumber Mill. It allows you to collect Timber from trees that you come across as you level up. Timber can be converted to GR via work orders at the Lumber Mill.

3.2 Build Order for Raiding
This guide will suggest the best possible buildings for your Garrison, specifically intended toward a Raider. This guide is for a level 3 garrison, attained once level 100 is reached. For any lower level garrison, please refer to the Build Order for Leveling guide above.

Small:
Salvage Yard. Allows you to gear up you followers so they can run dungeon and raid missions which can award you with gear. Raid missions specifically award you with items that are from a raid difficulty higher then the one you are running (one difficulty above current, if you're raiding Mythic you will also get 1000 gold).
2 Profession Buildings. Choose the ones that match your professions.

Medium:
Trading Post. Allows you to trade GR for any materials, so you can make consumables. It also allows you to trade random materials each day for GR via work orders.
Lumber Mill. Keeps you well supplied with GR. Do note that Barn is better if you have already unlocked the lvl 3 blueprints.

Large:
The Barracks. Increases follower limit to 25, allowing more missions at once.
Bunker. Can help gear up followers via work orders. Provides you with a free Seal of Tempered Fate each week (bonus roll).

3.3 Build Order for Gold Making
This guide will suggest the best possible buildings for your Garrison, specifically intended toward gold making. This guide is for a level 3 garrison, attained once level 100 is reached. For any lower level garrison, please refer to the Build Order for Leveling guide above. This guide will focus on your MAIN character. If you have ALTS that you plan on using for gold making, use this guide for your MAIN and the Altoholic guide below for ALTS.

Small:
Salvage Yard. Allows you to gear up you followers so they can run dungeon and raid missions which can award you with gear. Most missions reward gold or GR. The harder the mission, the better the reward.
2 Profession Buildings. Choose the ones that match your professions.

Medium:
Trading Post. Allows you to trade GR for any materials, these can then be sold. Also gives you a Auction House in your garrison.
Lumber Mill. Allows you to gather Timber. Turn Timber into GR via work orders. Turn GR into materials at the Trading Post.

Large:
The Barracks. Increases follower limit to 25, allowing more missions at once.
Mage Tower / Stables. Both can reduce travel time around Draenor, allowing you to get to your farming spots quicker. Choose based on personal preference.

3.4 Build Order for Altoholics
This guide will suggest the best possible buildings for your Garrison, specifically intended toward those whom have and love their alts (altoholics). This guide is for a level 3 garrison, attained once level 100 is reached. For any lower level garrison, please refer to the Leveling guide. This guide will focus on your ALTS. If you have a MAIN, use either the Gold Making or Raider guide for your MAIN. Alts will be split into 2 types: alts used for gold making; Raider alts. If you have alts that you wanna raid with use the Raider guide for them.

ALTS USED FOR GOLD MAKING

Small:
Salvage Yard. Allows you to gear up you followers so they can run dungeon and raid missions which can award you with gear. Most missions reward gold or GR. The harder the mission, the better the reward.
2 Profession Buildings. Choose the ones that match your professions. Make sure your alts have different professions and abuse this.

Medium:
Trading Post. Allows you to trade GR for any materials, these can then be sold. Also gives you a Auction House in your garrison.
Lumber Mill / Barn. Build different one on each alt. Both require around the same time investment. Lumber Mill lets you gather Timber to trade for GR via work order, and then trade that GR for any material at the Trading Post. Barn allows collection of Savage Blood used to craft all epics, some of which you can sell. It might be a good idea to start with a Barn at 100 on a few alts to quickly unlock the lvl 3 blueprints.

Large:
The Barracks. Increases follower limit to 25, allowing more missions at once.
Mage Tower / Stables. Both can reduce travel time around Draenor, allowing you to get to your farming spots quicker. Choose based on personal preference.

Abuse your Bonus buildings on as many alts as possible. This will supply you with HUGE amounts of ore and herbs for free.

For raiding and for simplicity, you can build garrisons in this order...

Level 1 Garrison -- Build these...
Barracks (lrg plot)
Salvage Yard (sm plot)

Level 2 Garrison -- Build these (in addition to what is already there)...
Inn (md plot)
One of your profession Buildings (sm plot)

Level 3 Garrison -- Build these (in addition to what is already there)...
Bunker (lrg plot)
Trading Post (md plot)
Other profession hut (sm plot)

There,  no thinking required :P  You can always swap around your buildings later and then bitch at me for costing you money.
